I’ve been using Alba sunscreen on my kids for probably a decade now, but after looking at the EWG sunscreen guide this year, it looks like I could do a little bit better in terms of finding a sunscreen with a better rating when it came to safety. So…I started down the path of trying to find a sunscreen that was both “natural” or free of potentially hazardous chemicals AND vegan. Unfortunately many of the sunscreens on the market today include beeswax or do not clearly state if they are vegan or cruelty free. These 5 sunscreens are all vegan, cruelty free and reef safe!
All Good was started when a massage therapist began making All Good Goop, a healing balm that she started using on herself and gifting to friends. A few year later she started a business which now participates in 1% for the planet, a group of companies that donate 1% of their profits to environmental nonprofits and is a Certified B Corporation that seeks to improve the quality of life for their employees and their impact on the environment. While most of their products are unfortunately not vegan (beeswax) their sunscreens are vegan and cruelty free. They also contain calendula that is grown on their own farm.
Babo Botanicals was created by an industry professional who had worked for big personal care and cosmetic brands, including L’Oreal, LVMH, Avon, and Redken. When Kate Solomon became pregnant with her first child she searched for a product that met her own professional standards, was made from natural ingredients and was free of common allergens. Not finding it, she started her own brand named after her son’s stuffed bunny. Today not only is her brand made from natural ingredients, dairy, gluten, soy, almond/peanut free but the company also support the Edible Garden at the New York Botanical Gardens which is a 100 acre campus that teaches children good nutrition and healthy living through urban farming and gardening.
Baby Bum is a completely vegan, cruelty free, plant based company. All their products are also sulfate, paraben and gluten free.
Sunumbra is a unique sunscreen made from organic, wild sourced and natural ingredients that offers full spectrum protection from the sun. Certified cruelty free by PETA and completely vegan, if you’re looking for a completely natural sunscreen with a unique blend of plant extracts that help protect you from the sun, this is it.
Think Baby‘s first and probably most recognizable products are their stainless steel and BPA-free baby bottles that they started making when 95% of baby bottles where made with endocrine disrupting BPA. The founder of Think Baby and Think Sport used to work in a biological testing lab and started his business because he was alarmed by the amount of endocrine disrupting chemicals leeching from products regardless of where they were made. With a precautionary principal, Think Baby makes products with health in mind, choosing to not use any potentially hazardous chemicals. They have also donated over $500,000 to emergency disaster relief funds and nonprofit organizations like Habitat for Humanity.
While all these sunscreen companies are great, please keep in mind sunscreen should be used last! As a fair skinned red head I almost never get sunburned because I’ve learned not to rely on sunscreen. Instead I cover up (even at the pool) and try to avoid midday sun. Another good strategy is to set a timer on your phone to remind yourself to reapply sunscreen, check the UV index before you leave the house and plan outdoor activities in the early morning or late afternoon.
